From 160 kg to 100 kg: How I’m Losing Weight and Rediscovering Myself After Loss

From 160 kg to 100 kg: How I’m Losing Weight and Rediscovering Myself After Loss

Losing my dad was a profound loss that shook me to my core. In the aftermath, I didn’t turn to food for comfort—instead, I lost control of my life in other ways. I slept less, my stress levels skyrocketed, and I developed high blood pressure and glucose resistance. To make matters worse, some of the medications I was prescribed perpetuated the glucose resistance, leading to truncal obesity. Before I knew it, I was 160 kg, feeling trapped in a body that no longer felt like my own. My health was deteriorating, and I felt powerless to stop it.

But over the years, I’ve learned that weight loss and healing are about more than just the physical. They’re about addressing the root causes, rebuilding balance, and nurturing the soul, body, and spirit. Through this journey, I’ve managed to lose 60 kg, bringing me down to 100 kg. While I’m still working toward my goals, I’ve discovered that true transformation happens when you address the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. In this blog, I want to share how I’ve learned to align these three aspects of my being to create a healthier, happier, and more balanced life.

The Body: Rebuilding Health from the Inside Out

When I first realized the extent of my health issues, I knew I had to take action. But it wasn’t just about losing weight—it was about addressing the underlying conditions that were holding me back.

  • Managing Medical Conditions: I worked closely with my doctor to adjust my medications and find alternatives that didn’t exacerbate my glucose resistance. This was a crucial first step in regaining control of my health.

  • Prioritizing Sleep: I realized that my lack of sleep was contributing to my stress, weight gain, and overall health issues. I made it a priority to establish a consistent sleep routine, aiming for 7-8 hours each night.

  • Reclaiming Movement: I started small, with gentle exercises like walking and stretching. Over time, I built up to more intense activities, like strength training and yoga, which helped me regain strength and energy.

The Soul: Healing Emotional Wounds

The emotional toll of losing my dad and the subsequent health challenges left me feeling disconnected and overwhelmed. To truly move forward, I had to address the emotional and mental aspects of my journey.

  • Finding Unexpected Support: My wife and I were in the process of figuring out which therapist would be the best fit when I started opening up to my patients about how I felt. Surprisingly, many of them had gone through similar experiences. They became my unofficial therapists, offering empathy, advice, and a sense of community that I hadn’t expected.

  • Practicing Mindfulness: I began incorporating mindfulness practices into my daily routine, such as meditation and deep breathing. These helped me manage stress and stay present, rather than feeling overwhelmed by the past or future.

  • Cultivating Self-Compassion: I learned to be kinder to myself, recognizing that my weight gain and health issues were not a reflection of my worth. I celebrated small victories and reminded myself that progress, not perfection, was the goal.

The Spirit: Reconnecting with Purpose

As I worked on healing my body and soul, I began to feel a deeper sense of purpose and connection. I realized that my journey wasn’t just about losing weight—it was about reclaiming my life and honoring my dad’s memory.

  • Finding My “Why”: I connected with my deeper reasons for wanting to improve my health. It wasn’t just about the number on the scale; it was about feeling strong, energetic, and capable of living a full life.

  • Practicing Gratitude: I started a daily gratitude practice, which helped me shift my focus from what I lacked to what I had. This simple habit brought more joy and positivity into my life.

  • Engaging in Spiritual Practices: Whether it was meditation, spending time in nature, or simply taking a few moments to breathe deeply, these practices helped me feel grounded and connected to something greater than myself.

How the Soul, Body, and Spirit Work Together

My journey taught me that the soul, body, and spirit are deeply interconnected. When I cared for my body through better sleep, movement, and medical management, I also boosted my mood and energy levels. When I nurtured my soul through mindfulness and emotional healing, I was better able to manage stress and stay committed to my goals. And when I connected with my spirit through purpose and gratitude, I found the motivation and resilience to keep going.

Practical Tips for Your Own Journey

If you’re on a similar path, here are some tips that have helped me align my soul, body, and spirit:

  1. Start Small: Focus on one change at a time, whether it’s improving your sleep, adding gentle movement to your day, or practicing mindfulness.

  2. Be Patient: Healing and weight loss are journeys, not races. Celebrate every step forward, no matter how small.

  3. Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from medical professionals, therapists, or loved ones.

  4. Celebrate Non-Scale Victories: Focus on how you feel, not just the number on the scale. Celebrate improvements in your energy, mood, and overall well-being.

Final Thoughts

Losing 60 kg has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. But more than the weight I’ve lost, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself and a renewed sense of purpose. This journey has taught me that true transformation happens when you care for your soul, body, and spirit together.

If you’re struggling with your own health journey, know that you’re not alone. It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress. Take it one day at a time, and remember to be kind to yourself along the way. You are worthy of love, health, and happiness.

I’d love to hear about your journey. How do you nurture your soul, body, and spirit? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below—we’re all in this together!

The Healing Power of Forgiveness: Nurturing Your Heart, Body, and Soul

The heart is more than just a physical organ—it’s the center of our emotions, the seat of our soul, and the bridge between our physical and spiritual selves. While we often focus on diet and exercise to care for our hearts, there’s another powerful practice that can transform our well-being: forgiveness.

Forgiveness is more than just letting go of grudges or reconciling with others. It’s a profound act of self-care that heals the heart, calms the mind, and nourishes the soul. In this article, we’ll explore the science behind forgiveness, its impact on holistic health, and practical steps to make forgiveness a part of your life.

The Science of Forgiveness: How It Heals the Body

Research has shown that forgiveness isn’t just good for the soul—it’s good for the body, too. Holding onto anger, resentment, or grudges can create chronic stress, which takes a toll on the heart and overall health.

A 2007 study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, titled "Forgiveness and Health: A Review and Theoretical Exploration of the Pathways Linking Forgiveness to Better Health," highlights the profound benefits of forgiveness. The study found that forgiveness:

  • Reduces stress and lowers levels of cortisol (the stress hormone).

  • Lowers blood pressure, which is critical for heart health.

  • Improves cardiovascular function and reduces the risk of heart disease.

  • Boosts the immune system, helping the body fight illness more effectively.

Forgiveness, in other words, is a form of medicine for the body. By releasing negative emotions, we create space for healing and vitality.

The Emotional Heart: How Forgiveness Nurtures the Soul

The heart is often seen as the center of our emotions, and forgiveness plays a key role in emotional well-being. Holding onto anger or resentment can weigh heavily on the soul, leading to feelings of bitterness, sadness, and disconnection.

When we forgive, we:

  • Release Negative Emotions: Letting go of anger and resentment frees us from emotional burdens, creating space for joy, peace, and connection.

  • Improve Relationships: Forgiveness can repair broken relationships and strengthen bonds with loved ones, fostering a sense of belonging and support.

  • Cultivate Empathy: Forgiveness helps us see situations from another person’s perspective, deepening our understanding and compassion.

Forgiveness isn’t about excusing harmful behavior or forgetting what happened. It’s about choosing to release the emotional weight of the past so we can move forward with lightness and grace.

The Spiritual Heart: Forgiveness as a Path to Inner Peace

Forgiveness is also a deeply spiritual practice. Many spiritual traditions emphasize forgiveness as a path to inner peace, connection, and alignment with something greater than ourselves.

When we forgive, we:

  • Align with Our Values: Forgiveness reflects qualities like compassion, humility, and love—values that resonate with our higher selves.

  • Experience Freedom: Letting go of grudges frees us from the past and allows us to live more fully in the present.

  • Deepen Our Connection: Forgiveness can strengthen our connection to others, to ourselves, and to the universe.

Practices like meditation, prayer, or reflective journaling can help us cultivate forgiveness and align with our spiritual hearts.

Practical Steps to Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Here are some practical steps to help you embrace forgiveness in your life:

  1. Start Small: Begin by forgiving minor grievances, such as a rude comment or a small mistake. This helps build your capacity for forgiveness.

  2. Reframe the Situation: Try to see the situation from the other person’s perspective. Understanding their motives or struggles can make forgiveness easier.

  3. Let Go of Resentment: Acknowledge your pain, but choose to release the hold it has on you. This doesn’t mean forgetting or condoning the behavior—it means freeing yourself from its emotional weight.

  4. Practice Self-Forgiveness: Often, we are hardest on ourselves. Let go of guilt and shame by treating yourself with the same compassion you would offer a friend.

  5. Seek Support: If forgiveness feels overwhelming, consider talking to a therapist, counselor, or spiritual advisor. They can provide guidance and support as you work through your emotions.

The Ripple Effect of Forgiveness

When we practice forgiveness, we create a ripple effect that touches every aspect of our lives:

  • Body: Forgiveness reduces stress and supports heart health.

  • Soul: Letting go of anger and resentment improves emotional well-being.

  • Spirit: Forgiveness aligns us with our higher values and fosters inner peace.

By embracing forgiveness, we nurture our hearts in all three dimensions—body, soul, and spirit—creating a foundation for true well-being.

Conclusion: Forgiveness as a Gift to Yourself

Forgiveness is one of the most powerful gifts you can give yourself. It heals the heart, calms the mind, and nourishes the soul. By letting go of anger and resentment, you create space for joy, peace, and connection.

So, take a moment today to reflect: Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there something you need to forgive yourself for? By choosing forgiveness, you take a powerful step toward holistic health and well-being.

Your heart—body, soul, and spirit—will thank you.

One Heart, Three Dimensions: How Body, Soul, and Spirit Converge for True Well-Being.

The heart is more than just a physical organ that pumps blood through our bodies. It is often seen as the center of our emotions, the seat of our soul, and the bridge between our physical and spiritual selves. To truly care for our hearts, we must embrace a holistic approach that nurtures not only the body but also the spirit and soul. Unfortunately, many people focus solely on the physical aspects of heart health, neglecting the profound impact of emotional and spiritual well-being. In this blog, we’ll explore how to care for your heart in a way that honors the interconnectedness of your entire being, supported by scientific research.

1. Caring for the Physical Heart: The Foundation of Wellness

The physical heart is the engine that keeps us alive, and its health is paramount. Here are some practical ways to care for your physical heart, backed by research:

  • Nourish Your Body with Heart-Healthy Foods: A 2014 meta-analysis published in Annals of Internal Medicine by Rajiv Chowdhury et al. found that replacing saturated and trans fats with unsaturated fats (like omega-3s) significantly reduces coronary risk. Incorporate a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to support your heart.

DOI: 10.7326/M13-1788

  • Move Your Body Regularly: Exercise is one of the best ways to strengthen your heart. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, swimming, or yoga, most days of the week.

  • Prioritize Sleep: Poor sleep can lead to high blood pressure, weight gain, and stress—all of which strain the heart. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

  • Manage Stress: Chronic stress can take a toll on your heart. Practice stress-reducing techniques like deep breathing, meditation, or spending time in nature.

  • Regular Check-Ups: Don’t neglect routine health screenings. Monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, and other heart health markers can help catch potential issues early.

While these physical practices are essential, they are only one piece of the puzzle. True heart health requires attention to the emotional and spiritual dimensions of our lives as well.

2. Nurturing the Soul: Emotional and Mental Well-Being

The heart is often associated with emotions, and emotional health is deeply tied to heart health. Research shows that positive emotions and strong social connections can significantly impact cardiovascular well-being. Here’s how to care for your soul:

  • Cultivate Joy and Gratitude: A 2015 study published in Psychosomatic Medicine by Jeff C. Huffman et al. found that positive emotions like optimism and gratitude are associated with better cardiovascular health. Start a daily gratitude practice or spend time doing activities that bring you happiness.

DOI: 10.1097/PSY.0000000000000153

  • Process Emotions Healthily: Suppressing emotions like anger, sadness, or fear can lead to stress and negatively impact your heart. Journaling, talking to a trusted friend, or seeking therapy can help you process emotions in a healthy way.

  • Build Meaningful Connections: Loneliness and isolation can harm both your emotional and physical heart. A 2010 meta-analysis by Julianne Holt-Lunstad et al. in PLOS Medicine found that strong social relationships reduce mortality risk, including from cardiovascular disease. Invest in relationships that bring you joy, support, and a sense of belonging.

DOI: 10.1371/journal.pmed.1000316

  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same care and understanding you would offer a loved one. Self-criticism and negativity can weigh heavily on your soul and, in turn, your heart.

3. Feeding the Spirit: The Heart’s Deeper Connection

The heart is often seen as the gateway to the spirit, the part of us that seeks meaning, purpose, and connection to something greater. Research has shown that spiritual practices can have a profound impact on heart health. Here’s how to nurture your spiritual heart:

  • Engage in Mindfulness or Meditation: Taking time to quiet your mind and connect with your inner self can help you align with your spiritual core. Practices like meditation, prayer, or mindful breathing can deepen this connection. A 2001 review by Harold G. Koenig in American Journal of Psychiatry highlights how spiritual practices like meditation and prayer reduce stress and improve mental and physical health.

DOI: 10.1176/appi.ajp.158.6.825

  • Live with Purpose: A sense of purpose is linked to better heart health and overall well-being. Reflect on what gives your life meaning and take steps to align your daily actions with your values.

  • Connect with Nature: Spending time in nature can be a deeply spiritual experience. Whether it’s a walk in the woods, sitting by the ocean, or tending to a garden, nature has a way of grounding us and reminding us of our place in the universe.

  • Practice Forgiveness: Holding onto resentment or grudges can weigh heavily on your heart—both emotionally and spiritually. Forgiveness, whether toward others or yourself, can free your spirit and lighten your heart. I will explore this in more details in my next blog.

  • Seek Community: Spiritual practices often thrive in community. Whether it’s through a faith-based group, a meditation circle, or a volunteer organization, connecting with others who share your values can nourish your spirit.

The Interconnectedness of Spirit, Soul, and Body

The beauty of a holistic approach to heart health is that it recognizes the interconnectedness of spirit, soul, and body. When you care for one aspect of yourself, it positively impacts the others. For example, practicing gratitude (soul) can reduce stress (body) and deepen your sense of connection to the universe (spirit). Similarly, regular exercise (body) can boost your mood (soul) and create a sense of vitality that fuels your spiritual practices.

Conclusion: A Heart-Centered Life

Taking care of your heart is about more than just eating right and exercising—it’s about living a heart-centered life. It’s about nurturing your emotions, connecting with your deeper purpose, and treating your body as the sacred vessel it is. While many people focus solely on the physical aspects of heart health, the research is clear: emotional and spiritual well-being are just as important.

So, take a moment today to check in with your heart. How is your body feeling? What emotions are present in your soul? What is your spirit longing for? By honoring all aspects of yourself, you can cultivate a heart that is not only healthy but also full of love, joy, and vitality.

Here’s to a heart-centered life—one that beats strong in body, soul, and spirit. 💛
